Teach by Dennis DiNoia
TEACH by Dennis DiNoia (the full book title is TEACH: Creating Independently Responsible Learners) is a small but powerful book. It emphasizes the importance of helping homeschool students become independently responsible learners.
The author, Dennis DiNoia, is the educator behind the Mr. D Math programs.
DiNoia expands on his central message in the book that teaching students how to learn independently is critical to their future success. This allows them to more easily pursue their interests on their own and develop a lifelong love for learning.
In essence, the author encourages the idea that as homeschooling parents, we’re doing more than simply teaching a subject. We’re teaching our children how to learn, and therefore preparing them for life.
How to Be a Better Homeschool Teacher
One aspect of the book that caught my attention was the fresh approach to grading work and test-taking.
DiNoia encourages parents and teachers to encourage students to really focus on finding “the question” during test-taking. He devotes an entire chapter to this as an example of how to hone in on what’s important when learning.
He also explains the importance of self-assessment and students correcting their own work as a learning tool rather than solely relying on traditional grading and assessment methods.
These are just two of the several practical “how to homeschool better” tips I found in this book. These teaching methodologies are also incorporated into the various classes offered in the Mr. D. Math catalog of homeschool curriculum.
Raising Independently Responsible Learners
I enjoyed reading TEACH: Creating Independently Responsible Learners. After many years of homeschooling, I’m finding that from time to time, I need a reminder of my mission. And that my. role is more than simply helping my child through master long division or correcting grammar drills.
This book helped me reframe my thoughts to focus on teaching how to learn rather than teaching the times tables or the quadratic equation.
In addition, TEACH by Dennis DiNoia provides practical strategies to empower students to set goals, take charge of their education and become self-directed learners.
Plus it’s full of actionable resources to kickstart the new school year. And I believe this book’s insights and suggestions can positively shape your 2023/2024 homeschooling journey.
